Teton Ranch Roping National Day of the Cowboy (No state provided)

July 25, 2015 @ 10:00 am - July 26, 2015 @ 5:00 pm

If you’re looking for an action-packed spectacle of flying dirt, horses, horsemanship and livestock, check out the Teton Valley Rodeo Company’s Friday night rodeo.

If you’re interested in seeing how much of the real ranching world operates, head to Teton Basin Ranch Roping’s event this weekend, which will feature two days of competition, food and live music by western folk singer Trinity Seely. The event is a fundraiser for the Teton County Fair Board, and all proceeds will go to maintaining the rodeo grounds.

This second year of ranch roping will go from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26 at the Teton County Fairgrounds.

Unlike the crowd-pleasing events of the rodeo, ranch roping takes into account the skills necessary for working stock as they did 100 years ago “before there were fences.” “Ranch roping is at the heart of all ranch work, and unlike the rodeo variation of team roping, the ‘vaquero’ or ‘buckaroo’ tradition utilizes quality horsemanship and fancy roping skills to handle stock in a low-stress setting,” she said in a press release.

Riders can register the morning of the event between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Registration is $30, and $10 for youth 14 and under.

Spectators can enjoy the free event, and should bring their own camp chair to watch the action at the pavilion. The pulled-pork dinner, in the fair building at 6 p.m. on Saturday, is $10 and the kids hot dog plate is $5. The concert by singer-songwriter and buckaroo Trinity Seely, who currently hails from Nebraska, takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the pavilion, and tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for kids ages 5 and up.

“Having Trinity come sing is a highlight of the weekend,” organizer Travis Allen said. “It happens to be the National Day of the Cowboy as well.”

The Fair Board has increased their revenue stream and has plans to augment the existing facilities at the fairgrounds.

“We have plans to remodel the fair building to include a commercial kitchen that can be rented by cottage industries and this winter, we will begin planning for a campground and horse boarding facility at the fairgrounds,” the board said in a release. “We are making steps on the fair board to develop the fairgrounds as a sustainable, year-round revenue generator and economic driver for the community.”

The Teton Basin Ranch Roping club is open to the public and meets every Wednesday night to practice at the fairgrounds. Contact Travis Allen for more information.
