Campaign Status & Volunteers

2021 National Day of the Cowboy Bill Campaign

We opened the year 2020 with fifteen states having passed the National Day of the Cowboy bill and that’s still where we are today as we begin 2021. The year of Covid brought all of our work to a halt for the entire year and longer.

Our  goal remains to add at least five more states to that list before the 17th Annual National Day of the Cowboy, July 24, 2021. We need committed volunteers from each of the remaining 35 states in order to achieve the final goal of securing a permanent day of recognition for the cowboy and cowgirl in all fifty states.

Contact us if you’d like to volunteer to help us enlist a legislator to sponsor the NDOC bill in your state if it is not on the list of states that have already awarded permanent status to the NDOC bill.

If your state does not have a volunteer listed below, as we continue in the effort in 2021, and you’d like to help, or if you’d like to help a volunteer already on board, email  info@nationaldayofthecowboy.com. It is not a difficult or complicated process to enlist a senator or representative as a bill sponsor in your state legislature, and it never involves petitions or letter campaigns. We’ll send you the information you need to seek and gain passage and we’re always available to answer any questions you might have about the process. We now have thirty-six states flying the NDOC flag too, so we should have at least that many states on board with the bill. Last year all the NDOC events had to be cancelled in communities nationwide and we want to see those celebrations reinstated and continue to grow. We also love to have other countries join in celebration, so contact us if you’d like to promote the National Day of the Cowboy in a country other than the United States.

Here is the bill history as of April 25, 2019, with states listed in green that have already passed the NDOC bill, officially recognizing the 4th Saturday in July as their National Day of the Cowboy in perpetuity. Will you help us move your state into one of the next slots?

2020 National Day of the Cowboy Campaign

We opened the year 2020 with fifteen states having passed the National Day of the Cowboy bill. On January 16th, the Missouri House Committee on Tourism heard our bill in committee. MO Representative Warren Love and NDOC Executive Director Bethany Braley both testified on behalf of the bill. Now that the NDOC is located in Missouri, it would be wonderful to see Missouri be the first state to pass it in 2020. We also have a bill sponsor in TN, Representative Holt.

Contact us if you’d like to volunteer to help us enlist a legislator to sponsor the NDOC bill in your state if it is not on the list of states that have already awarded permanent status to the NDOC bill.

Our current goal is to add at least five more states to that list before the 16th Annual National Day of the Cowboy, July 25, 2020. We need committed volunteers from each of the remaining 35 states in order to achieve the final goal of securing a permanent day of recognition for the cowboy and cowgirl in all fifty states.

If your state does not have a volunteer listed below, as we continue in the 2020 campaign, and you’d like to help, or if you’d like to help a volunteer already on board, email  info@nationaldayofthecowboy.com. Last year there were well over seventy NDOC events in communities nationwide and we want to see that number continue to grow. We also love to have other countries join in this celebration, so contact us if you’d like to promote the National Day of the Cowboy in a country other than the United States.

2019 National Day of the Cowboy Campaign

At 9:27 AM on March 28, 2019, the Arkansas House voted to pass the National Day of the Cowboy bill, which had already been passed by the AR senate. It now moves on to the governor for signing. Just a few days later, we received word from Rick Thompson at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, that on the afternoon of April 1, 2019, the North Dakota legislature also passed the National Day of the Cowboy bill. This means we are now up to fourteen  states that have passed the National Day of the Cowboy bill permanently into law. Those states are; Wyoming (#1), California (#2), New Mexico (#3), Arizona (#4), Oklahoma (#5), Oregon (#6), Mississippi (#7), Kansas(#8), Virginia (#9), Texas (#10), Idaho (#11), Indiana (#12), Arkansas (#13) and North Dakota (#14). Having this many states on board, should make it easier for us to engage the remaining states to join in passing the National Day of the Cowboy as a bill (rather than a resolution), in perpetuity.

Contact us if you’d like to volunteer to help us enlist a legislator to sponsor the NDOC bill in your state if it is not on the list of states that have already awarded permanent status to the NDOC bill. As of April 2019, we have still have committed bill sponsors in MO, TN and CO.

Our current goal is to add at least three more states to that list before the 15th Annual National Day of the Cowboy, July 27, 2019. We need committed volunteers from each of the remaining states in order to achieve the final goal of securing a permanent day of recognition for the cowboy and cowgirl in all fifty states.

If your state does not have a volunteer listed below, as we continue in the 2019 campaign, and you’d like to help, or if you’d like to help a volunteer already on board, email  info@nationaldayofthecowboy.com. It is not a difficult or complicated process to enlist a senator or representative as a bill sponsor in your state legislature, and it never involves petitions or letter campaigns. We’ll send you the information you need to seek and gain passage and we’re always available to answer any questions you might have about the process. We now have thirty-four states flying the NDOC flag too, so we should have at least that many states on board with the bill. Last year there were well over seventy NDOC events in communities nationwide and we want to see that number continue to grow. We also love to have other countries join in this celebration, so contact us if you’d like to promote the National Day of the Cowboy in a country other than the United States.

2014 National Day of the Cowboy Campaign

Every year we start looking for volunteers and bill sponsors a little earlier than the previous year. The 2013 National Day of the Cowboy resolution crusade ramped up early to capitalize on the momentum gained as a result of Wyoming and California becoming the first and second states to pass the NDOC bill in perpetuity in 2012. On March 4, 2013, New Mexico became the third state to make history by awarding permanent status to the National Day of the Cowboy bill. On April 3, 2013 Arizona took the fourth slot with unanimous passage of Senator Gail Griffin’s NDOC bill by the Arizona Senate. The following day, April 4, Oklahoma announced it too had passed the NDOC bill with the support of Senator Don Barrington, giving Oklahoma the fifth slot. On May 7, 2013, Oregon became the sixth state to pass the bill in perpetuity, thanks to the sponsorship of Senator Doug Whitsett and Rep Mike McLane. On June 28th, volunteer Rip Copeland heard from his NDOC sponsor, Representative Nolan Mettetal, that the NDOC bill had passed in the Mississippi House, and thanks to Senator Videt Carmichaels, it had also passed in the Mississippi Senate, so Mississippi became the seventh state to vote the NDOC into perpetuity. In April 2014, Kansas stepped up to become the 8th state in history to award permanent status to the National Day of the Cowboy, which Governor Brownback signed into law on the National Day of the Cowboy. .

The bold action of Wyoming (#1), California (#2), New Mexico (#3), Arizona (#4), Oklahoma (#5), Oregon #6, Mississippi #7 and Kansas #8, should clear the trail for other states to join in passing the National Day of the Cowboy as a bill (rather than a resolution), in perpetuity. With eight states awarding permanent status to the NDOC bill, our goal is to add eighteen more states to that list before the 10th Annual National Day of the Cowboy July 26, 2014. We need committed volunteers in order to achieve that goal.

If your state does not have a volunteer listed below as we continue into the 2014 campaign, and you’d like to help, or if you’d like to help a volunteer already on board, email  info@nationaldayofthecowboy.com. It’s not a difficult or complicated process to enlist a senator or representative as a bill sponsor in your state legislature, and it does not involve petitions or letter campaigns. We’ll send you all of the information you need to seek and gain passage and we’re always available to answer any questions you might have about the process. We now have twenty-nine states flying the NDOC flag too, so we should have at least that many states on board with the bill as well. We’d also love to have other countries join in this celebration, so please contact us if you’d like to promote the National Day of the Cowboy in a country other than the United States.

2013 National Day of the Cowboy Campaign

The 2013 National Day of the Cowboy crusade ramped up early to capitalize on the momentum gained as a result of Wyoming and California becoming the first and second states to pass the NDOC bill in perpetuity. We have a race on to see what states will be among the first ten states to make the NDOC permanent. The next day, on April 4, Oklahoma announced it too had passed the NDOC bill with the support of Senator Don Barrington, which gave Oklahoma the fifth slot. Then, on May 7, 2013, Oregon became the sixth state to pass the bill in perpetuity, thanks to the sponsorship of Senator Doug Whitsett and Rep Mike McLane. On June 28th, volunteer Rip Copeland was notified by his NDOC sponsor, Representative Nolan Mettetal, that the NDOC bill had passed in the Mississippi House, and thanks to Senator Videt Carmichaels, it had also passed in the Mississippi Senate so Mississippi became the seventh state to vote the NDOC into perpetuity. We also have a commitment from Kansas Rep Brian Weber, that they expect to pass the NDOC permanently when the Kansas legislature convenes in January 2014.

States with a 2013 resolution or proclamation, as of July 20, include Washington, Tennessee, Texas, Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas, and Idaho. We definitely need more state volunteers willing to enlist resolution sponsors in their state legislatures in 2013, with an emphasis on seeking permanent passage of our bill making the 4th Saturday in July a day to celebrate cowboy culture and pioneer heritage. The bold action of Wyoming (#1),California (#2), New Mexico (#3), Arizona (#4), Oklahoma (#5), and Oregon #6, should clear the trail for other states to join in passing the resolution in perpetuity.

If your state does not have a volunteer listed below and you’d like to help, or if you’d like to help a volunteer who is already on board, please email us at info@nationaldayofthecowboy.com. It’s not a difficult or complicated process to enlist a senator or representative as a resolution sponsor in your state legislature, and it never involves petitions or letter campaigns. 2012 National Day of the Cowboy Quest

The 2012 National Day of the Cowboy effort is in full swing, but we still need state volunteers willing to enlist resolution sponsors in their state legislatures. Wouldn’t it be great if this was our last year of going to state legislatures and perhaps in 2012, Congress would make the resolution permanent at last? On March 13th, 2012, thanks to Governor Matt Mead, Senator Jim Anderson, Representative Tom Lockhart, and volunteer Susan Thomas, Wyoming became the first state in history to pass the NDOC bill in perpetuity. On June 7, 2012, California became the second state to award permanent status to the fourth Saturday in July as the National Day of the Cowboy. This vote was the result of a concerted effort by dedicated NDOC volunteers, Vi Tara, Janet Slutsky, Bob Fox, Larry Brady, Brent Slutsky, Belinda Gail, and Bob Lorbeer. The bold action of Wyoming and California should clear the trail for other states to join in passing the NDOC bill in perpetuity. Here’s a video of the California Senate presentation with California Senator Ted Gaines. https://vimeo.com/45099474

The governors of Indiana, Colorado, Kansas, Nevada, and Idaho have also signed an NDOC proclamation and the legislatures of AZ, TX, AL, and MO have also passed it in 2012.

If your state does not have a volunteer listed and you’d like to help, or if you’d like to help a volunteer who is already on board, please email us at info@nationaldayofthecowboy.com. It’s not a difficult or complicated process to enlist a senator or representative as a resolution sponsor in your state legislature and it never involves petitions or letter campaigns.

2009 State Legislature Campaign Volunteers

In 2009, we achieved passage of the National Day of the Cowboy resolution in five state legislatures. If you would like to volunteer to locate a sponsor for the National Day of the Cowboy resolution in your state legislature in 2011, email info@nationaldayofthecowboy.com and we’ll send you the information and the steps you’ll need to facilitate the process. Contrary to what you may have read elsewhere, this quest does NOT involve petitions in any way. Not one sponsor, including the first one, Wyoming’s late U.S. Senator Craig Thomas, has ever asked for a petition or for any letters from constituents. All that’s needed is a constituent willing to make the request and to provide a copy of the resolution, along with a few of the pertinent facts for the sponsor.

The following NDOC supporters and volunteers achieved passage of the National Day of the Cowboy resolution in their state legislatures in 2009.

  • Arizona – Bethany Braley – Senator Rebecca Rios – passage June 29.
  • Kansas – Sandie Masden(Dodge City CVB)- Rep Pat George – passage April 6th.
  • New York – Robert DeMitry – Senator George Masiarz – passage January 13.
  • Oklahoma – Angie Maynor (Rte66 Interpretive Center) – Rep Danny Morgan – passage in the OK House April 29.
  • Texas – Bethany Braley – Senator Jeff Wentworth – passage in the Texas Senate March 30.
