Abilene plans National Day of the Cowboy Celebration

Gunfights, can-can dancers and live entertainment are planned in Old Abilene Town July 28 for The National Day of the Cowboy Celebration.
Throughout the day, living history demonstrations and live entertainment are planned. Cooking demonstrations are planned at the Pioneer Cabin and sewing demonstrations on the porch of the Merchants Hotel. Jack Pruett will demonstrate his tailoring skills using a treadle sewing machine.
At 10:30 a.m. and noon Dave “Zerf” Zerfas will perform cowboy songs. At 1:15 p.m. Jeff Sheets will give a historic talk on the American Cowboy. At 2:30 Geff Dawson, a cowboy poet, will perform.
A dinner of baby back ribs, baked potato, coleslaw, roll and dessert will be served at 5 p.m. for $10. Entertainment will be Bill Burrows, Geff Dawson and the western band Southfork of Cottonwood Falls. Cost is $5 for only the entertainment. Proceeds will go to restoration of Old Abilene Town. Tickets may be purchased at the Hitchin’ Post Restaurant, the Old Abilene Town General Store, the Abilene Smoky Valley Railroad Depot and the Dickinson County Heritage Center.
