Redlands CA – NDOC “Read Em Cowboy”

July 28, 2012

Free

Calling all fans of Western books, history, music, and culture!  Are you interested in the three Rs – ridin’, ropin’, and readin’?  If you’re looking for a great way to celebrate this year’s National Day of the Cowboy (July 28th), and support Western arts, culture, and traditions, why not saddle up and head for Read ’em Cowboy! at Barnes and Noble Booksellers in Redlands, California?

The Read em Cowboy book fair is in its second year at the Redlands Barnes & Noble and will feature nearly a dozen Western authors signing books and giving talks, children’s authors doing readings and other activities with kids, and a cowboy/cowgirl costume contest for the youngsters.  Along with the authors, there’ll be live cowboy music, rodeo queens, roping demonstration, raffles, cowboy vittles, and more.  Part of every book fair sale goes to National Day of the Cowboy.

Authors appearing will include Chris Enss, author of Thunder Over the Prairie: The True Story of a Murder and a Manhunt by the Greatest Posse of All Time (soon to be a major motion picture directed by Walter Hill); Rod Thompson, author of The Black Hills; Nick Cataldo, author of Earp Clan: The Southern California Years ; Bob Wood, author of Sage, Robert J. Harper, author of The Buffalo Soldier Chronicles: Incident on the Arikaree, and J.R. Sanders, author of the children’s Western The Littlest Wrangler.

Living historians will offer authentic portrayals of an 1880s cowboy, an 1876 7th U.S. Cavalry trooper, a post-Civil War “Buffalo Soldier” and an 1880s Texas Ranger. Raffle prizes include Western books, music, DVDs, home decor, magazine subscriptions, and much more.  Guests who arrive wearing a bandana or cowboy hat will receive one free raffle ticket; guests will also receive one free ticket upon proof of a B&N purchase. “Cowboy chili” and other treats, including Starbucks coffee (sorry, no Arbuckle’s!) will be available in the B&N Cafe.

Don’t live in Southern California?  Not to worry.  Even if you can’t make the event, you can still take part. Make a purchase at any Barnes & Noble store (or online at www.bn.com/bookfairs) from 7/28 – 8/2.  Just print a copy of the Read em Cowboy voucher and show it at checkout, or order online at www.bn.com/bookfairs, and enter the book fair ID# (10683183) at checkout.  Either way, when you use the voucher a portion of your sale goes to benefit the National Day of the Cowboy nonprofit organization.
